Improving Education for Children from Low-Income Families
Head Start programming, offered through a collaborative agreement between Heartland Head Start and Children’s Home & Aid, promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children in low-income families.
The Head Start program offers educational, health, disability, mental health, nutrition and social services to children from 3 to 5 years of age. Educational services are designed to meet the child’s individual interests. Learning experiences are planned to foster total growth and developmental skills. Children participate in music, art, language, literacy, dramatic play, math, science, and computer activities.
Head Start embraces a core set of values including: establishing a supportive learning environment for children, parents and staff; respecting the importance of all aspects of an individual’s development, including social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth; embracing a comprehensive vision of health for children, families and staff which ensures that basic health needs are met; encouraging the prevention of future illness; and promoting positive, culturally relevant health behaviors that enhance life-long well-being.
Head Start funding is dependent upon volunteer hours from parents. Parents are able to volunteer in their child’s classroom to see how their child interacts in a group setting.
