2Gen Chicago Program

About 2Gen

The 2Gen Program supports the entire family – both children and adults. 2Gen offers families the opportunity to work with a coach on goals they have, such as:

  • Better grades in school
  • Starting or growing financial savings
  • A new or better job

The 2Gen Program is part of a study hosted by Children’s Home & Aid in collaboration with the Chicago Housing Authority and Housing Authority of Cook County. Families must have at least one child under the age of 18 to be eligible to participate in 2Gen.

Note: Enrolled families will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: a group who will receive coaching services, and one that will not. Families in both groups will receive the enrollment gift card.

Choosing to participate will have no impact on a family’s voucher, and families will continue to receive all services that are normally available to them on the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

The 2Gen Program provides a coach who will work with you on goals for you and your family:

  • Education
  • Financial security
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Safety

Content Modules:

Child Well-being & Parenting

KEY THEME: Child and adolescent development is supported
by positive parent and caregiver relationships,
reduced stress, and strengthening executive
skills (aka “core” skills).

Employment, Education, & Career

KEY THEME: Set Milestones and SMART Goals for your
education and employment that are a good fit with your
skills and context. Be familiar with quality, local
employment & education resources.

Legal (Fines, Fees, Court, Child Support, Etc.)

KEY THEME: Reduce stress by helping participants know their
rights and access legal supports, such as referring a participant
to legal aid supports.

Financial

KEY THEME: Ground financial coaching in values, and
provide support to get banked and use other financial
tools (budget, debt payment plans, etc) to achieve goals.

Health & Well-being (Including Mental Health)

KEY THEME: Reducing stress and poverty can improve
mental and physical health for parents and children.
Harm reduction and Trauma-Informed
Care strategies are essential.

Family, Friends, & Relationships

KEY THEME: Positive, responsive relationships
is one of the biggest protective factors against
stress and increases resilience for parents and
kids. Positive Youth Development Principles
highlight the importance of social influence for
adolescents.

Reproductive Health

KEY THEME: Good reproductive health ensures that mothers
are receiving adequate prenatal, birth and postpartum health care.

Providing non-judgmental resources and support normalizes
the importance of preventative and ongoing reproductive medical
care as a means to taking ownership

Basic Needs (Food, Housing, Transportation, & Safety)

KEY THEME: Reduce stress by meeting basic needs and
modifying the environment to make accessing resource less
taxing, so families can focus less on immediate needs
and crisis and more on setting and progressing toward goals.
