Helping Children Cope with Divorce or Separation

A divorce or separation is a family crisis. Children whose parents are divorced or separated typically experience loneliness, feel less protected, and experience higher levels of stress than children living in stable, two-parent households.

The Children’s Home + Aid Kids’ Turn program is designed to help children cope with separation and divorce. More importantly, the program emphasizes to parents the importance of supporting their children’s emotional needs during this time of crisis. Through this six-week program, families learn skills to minimize the negative impacts of divorce through positive communication skills focused on the child’s needs.

Also, children learn to understand and cope with the changes taking place within the family. The Kids’ Turn workshops are facilitated by professionals familiar with the dynamics of divorce. Parent groups and children’s groups are run concurrently. Referrals come from the court (court referrals require a $75 fee, see FAQ #3), the community, and parents. Participation in Kids' Turn meets Illinois Rule 924 requirements for parent education.

Kids' Turn is offered in the Mid-Central Region.
