Helping Juveniles Successfully Transition to Independent Adulthood

The Children’s Home + Aid Independent Living program works with youth who are in the foster care and juvenile justice systems, to make a successful transition to responsible, independent adult life.

These young people (ages 18-21) have typically spent time in group homes or in treatment facilities, and are phasing out of the foster care or juvenile justice systems. Many have low self-esteem, poor social skills and lack positive peer relationships. Above all, they lack the requisite life skills to function on their own in society.

Children’s Home + Aid helps bridge the distance between juvenile care and independent living. Participants in the Independent Living program reside in a supervised apartment center. During their stay, they acquire the life skills necessary for successful independent living. They work to complete their primary education, plan for a career and practice responsible decision making. The program also helps these youths develop positive support systems and successfully utilize community resources.

The Independent Living program is offered in the Mid-Central Region.
